In an increasingly globalised world, international connectivity projects play a crucial role in the world economy. At the last G20 summit, the leaders of India, the United States, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates agreed to launch the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). A multi-modal initiative that seeks to link the Indian continent with Europe via the Persian Gulf.
IMEC represents a significant advance in rail and maritime infrastructure, as well as digital and financial infrastructure. This project addresses the need for a faster and more efficient trade route. Its main objective is to build a railway line that will allow Indian goods to be transported to the European continent in as little as 10 days, significantly shortening delivery times and strengthening trade links between these regions.
The impact of the Arab-Israeli conflict
Unfortunately, this ambitious project was marred by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that began on 7 October. These events led Saudi Arabia to announce a halt to the rapprochement process with Israel, which has led to uncertainty over the future of IMEC.
Israel is the last stop on the corridor before reaching Europe and Saudi Arabia’s role is central to the project. When the MoU was signed, the signatories agreed to meet again to discuss details and financing. This meeting has not yet taken place and in the current wartime context it is difficult to conceive of a situation in which Israel and Saudi Arabia would meet to discuss this issue. While the project is at a standstill due to political tensions, its potential economic benefit remains undeniable.
