What is the CEIV Pharma certificate?

What is the CEIV Pharma certificate?

What is the CEIV Pharma certificate?

Airlines transport more than 52 million metric tons of goods per year, representing more than 35% of world trade by value of goods. In addition, since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, air cargo has been a vital partner in the delivery of medicines, medical equipment (including spare parts and repair components) and, overall, in the maintenance of global supply chains as discussed here. On some occasions, passenger aircraft have been used as cargo ships or sanitary air corridors have been established due to the pandemic emergency.

At RFL, as experts in applying tailored logistics solutions, we continue to work tirelessly to secure and advise our customers with those cargoes that need to be transported urgently. In the case of the pharmaceutical sector, we guide them through the entire legal and administrative process required in these cases.

Among all the products transported during this coronavirus crisis, the sanitary ones stand out above any other. Precisely, due to the constant changes in regulations, strict requirements or procedures in the handling of this type of products, IATA -the International Air Transport Association that brings together 290 airlines in the world- launched the CEIV Pharma certificate in 2014 to guarantee the quality of the processes in the transport of products at controlled temperatures. In short, to pursue excellence in the worldwide handling of this type of key goods.

What does CEIV Pharma address?

Certification ensures international and domestic compliance to safeguard product integrity to its final destination, while addressing the specific needs of air cargo. CEIV Pharma ensures that facilities, equipment, operations and personnel comply with all applicable standards, regulations and guidelines expected of pharmaceutical manufacturers.

CEIV Pharma includes:

    • IATA temperature control regulations.
    • European Union Good Distribution Practices.
    • World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations.
    • The United States pharmacopoeia standards.

According to some calculations, adopting the CEIV Pharma has contributed to a -45% reduction in pharmaceutical acceptance non-conformities. Spain is the third European country, together with the Netherlands, in CEIV Pharma certificates behind Belgium (22) or Germany (19).

IATA, the big airline association

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the trade association of the world’s airlines, representing 290 airlines or 82% of total air traffic. IATA works to develop all areas of aviation activity and to help formulate industry policy on critical or topical issues. It is an effective instrument for cooperation between companies that promotes safety, reliability, confidence or economy in air transport.
