What is a controlled atmosphere?

Controlled atmosphere is a refrigeration technique in which the gas composition is modified in a refrigeration chamber or refrigerated container. In this way a regulation control of the physical variables of the environment (temperature, humidity and air circulation) is carried out.

The controlled atmosphere is applied to all types of transport of fruit and vegetable products and is generally characterised by having an atmosphere impoverished in oxygen (O2) and enriched in carbon dioxide (CO2). In this way, the composition of the air is precisely adjusted to the requirements of the packaged product and remains constant throughout the transport process.

As specialists in refrigerated transport, at RFL we always take this into account in order to adapt to the needs of each load and customer. When transporting perishables, it is essential to consider these types of issues in order to ensure success once the journey has been completed.

Benefits of controlled atmosphere

It is the ideal long-distance transport for fruits and vegetables as it involves:

  • Prolongation of the optimal conservation period between 40 and 60 %, with respect to the conservation in normal atmosphere.
  • It helps to reduce alterations and rottenness typical of cold storage at 0 º C, as it allows to raise temperatures.
  • It has a fungicidal effect due to the high concentration of CO2.
  • It does not leave residues in the treated product.
  • Helps to minimize the use of additives and preservatives.
  • Odour mixtures are avoided at the storage site.

The role of ethylene

Ethylene plays a very important role in the controlled atmosphere chain. It is a determining organic compound in the ripening process of fresh fruits and vegetables. Its correct administration is key to preserving the characteristics of the food and its value in the market, especially in transport whose transit time exceeds 20 days.
