Cold logistics, present and future for a strategic sector

The outbreak of the COVID-19 health crisis has highlighted the importance of logistics in the service of the most essential industries. After more than a year of tireless work by land, sea and air, the large logistics chains have shown their efficiency and resilience with total competitiveness. Special mention should be made of cold logistics, which has managed to position itself as essential during the toughest months of the pandemic and now, when vaccines are the great hope for everyone, as we have already mentioned here, it continues to be vital.

As an international freight forwarder with tailor-made door-to-door logistics solutions, RFL Cargo has also been part of this “miracle” during these months that has allowed the most essential things to never stop. Now, when it seems that we are beginning to see the first signs of normality, the refrigerated industry is considering where it needs to go in order to remain useful, safe and always at the service of basic transport.

Main challenges

According to some organisations in the sector, the main challenges facing the industry in the short and medium term will be:

  • Trying to make faster deliveries (speed).
  • Increasing workload because fewer and fewer items are being purchased more frequently.
  • Increased visibility through which consumers expect to know inventory availability and gain transparency during transit.
  • Improved technological readiness to meet the challenge of growth aligned with consumer demands such as immediate delivery.

Sustainability in focus

Another of the major fronts for cold logistics will undoubtedly be to reduce the carbon footprint. On the road to sustainability and efficiency in the industry, the challenge is to use natural refrigerants, optimise consumption and use recycled materials. In fact, new construction techniques and refrigeration equipment must be able to ensure compliance with legislation and future standards in order to guarantee a lower energy and environmental impact.
